Since there is money to be made by farming gold in World of Warcraft and selling it to other players, a number of farmers have used a few "underground" methods to generate gold and sell it for real money. To facilitate this, hacks have been developed for the game since its release in late 2004, with the aim of helping farmers make gold.
Does this actually work? Read on.
When WoW first came out, it was (like any other game) full of bugs, and there were a few glitches present. Farmers with a sophisticated level of programming knowledge could sometimes discover exploits Blizzard were not aware of, and use these exploits to make a lot of gold very quickly. They could then sell this gold for a whole ton of real life money because the gold prices back then were high.
Of course, if the exploit was abused, then Blizzard would begin noticing the economy changing and they would ban any accounts they found taking advantage of the exploit. But by then, the gold farmer could have made tens of thousands of dollars sometimes in a matter of days. They could use a number of accounts and quickly sell any gold made.
Remember that gold farming is a multi-million dollar business. Nowadays, however, exploits and hacks are not nearly as effective for a few reasons.
The main reason is because WoW is no longer full of bugs like it used to be. Major exploits were naturally exploited to make huge gold, catching Blizzard's attention. The exploit would then be fixed and could no longer be used. World of Warcraft has now been out for over 3 years and so most major exploits have definitely already been discovered and patched.
A second factor is that gold prices have naturally gone way down. With over 500,000 gold farmers in China alone, there is a whole ton of competition between gold farmers, and this has driven the prices down dramatically since the game was first released.
And thirdly, you'll risk getting your account(s) banned if you try any hacks or exploits now. Blizzard has become much smarter and will easily notice if you are trying anything underhanded. They employ a team of people to monitor the games economy, and if they find some players are making huge amounts of gold and are causing prices to come down, then they will ban those accounts.
So in conclusion, if you are a normal WoW player, you should definitely stick to investing a strategy guide or buying gold rather than trying out hacks and exploits. It definitely worked a couple of years ago but not now.
